Part of the goal of CPTED is to give citizens the ability to self-police and have “eyes on the street”. When people have clear lines of sight from their personal space to the public space, it is easier for crimes to be reported if not deterred. Balconies, manicured vegetation, visible signage for parking and good street lighting are important components of this concept. (Image taken 2014, Mexico DF, Mexico)
In multi-family housing blocks it is important that children have a safe place to congregate and play. Providing structures that are located in a protected area where parents and guardians can observe the children is critical. Healthy outdoor living is just as vital as sheltered space. More often than not, landscaping is cut out of the budget of projects. This beautification element offers so much to a space defining pathways, places to congregate, color and a sense of calm. Landscaping requires maintenance but the reward of a beautiful space offers so much to the user. (Image taken 2014, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico)
